    Carlow Courthouse is situated at the end of Dublin Street. It was designed by William Vitruvius Morrison in and completed in It is built of Carlow granite and gives the impression of being a temple set on a high plinth. The basement contains cells and dungeons. A cannon from the Crimean War stands on the steps. The stratification is quite regular between the granite country and Carlow, but with a change of colour and character as it recedes from the mass of granite. At first it changes to a dark blue, and madrepores are visible in it. The beds are extremely vesicular, and their numerous cavities are coated with a series of different fossils.

    Lorum Old Rectory was built from crisp, mellow, locally-cut County Carlow granite which gives the house a feeling of tremendous warmth.
